New Jersey Commute

For all the fellow New Jerseyans. This is how you get home through various methods. Don't get lost

Port Authority

Directions

Port Authority is a Bus Terminal located on 42nd St. and 8th Ave. In order to get there from Regis, you can take the 4,5,6 trains downtown to Grand Central. From Grand Central you can either take the 7 train (although sometimes the 7 train gets delayed) or the Shuttle (will be indicated by a circle with an S in the middle). While the Shuttle is usually less crowded and more reliable than the 7 train, it ends up being more far of a walk to Port Authority (choosing between either depends on your situation). When you get on the 7 train, make sure you get on the line going to 34th St. and Hudson Yards (the shuttle immediately takes you to Times Square). The 7 train will stop at 42nd Street on its 2nd stop. After you get off, you will have to walk through a large tunnel (usually a 2 minute walk), and once you reach the end of the tunnel, you will see the doors to Port Authority.

Tickets

From Port Authority, you will most likely use Coach USA/Rockland Coaches and NJ Transit buses. You can buy tickets for both on phone apps. Generally, NJ Transit buses run more frequently because they serve a much larger population. NJ Transit and Rockland Coaches do not always have buses that go to the same places. In order to check this, all you need to do is go to the “Schedules” tab on the NJ Transit app and then select the location you are traveling from to the location you want to travel to (on the Coach USA app, you simply have to type your origin and destination as soon as you open the app). Often times Coach Buses will also get delayed. Be prepared to wait 10-20 extra minutes occasionally for your bus. Also, try to buy your tickets before entering the bus terminal, because sometimes the data inside the terminal is not good. Most bus drivers will allow you to get on without buying a ticket first, if you explain your situation.
